PASSION AND THE ART OF FLY FISHING
with CHUY CRUZ
Chuy (pronounced – Chewey) Cruz invites you to to join him for a truly unique fly fishing experience.
Chuy grew up in a community of fishermen in Cabo Corrientes on the south shore of Banderas Bay. As a young lad he learned the techniques of the local fishermen. And these were real fishermen. Men who relied on the bounty of the sea for their survival. Under their guidance – fishing and a love of the sea became second nature to the young Chuy.
Chuy went off to the big city to study at the university but his roots and passion for the sea soon drew him back. He moved to Puerto Vallarta and began working with some of the local charter operators where he learned new skills and realized that you could make a living at this ‘fishing game’. He purchased a small boat and began to build a clientele for his new business.
In 1983, a client convinced Chuy to take a trip to Alaska where he discovered a world unlike any he had known before. He spent that first summer in the southeastern region of Alaska in the fishing village of Yakutat. It was there that he first found out about Fly Fishing. He was hooked. He returned the following two summers learning all that he could about fly fishing. From April to September he worked with local guides on the Situk river. Early in the season they fished for Steelheads and in the late summer it was Salmon.
By now, fly fishing was in his blood. Chuy spent 16 summers (1984 – 2002) returning to fish the rivers of Alaska. For 12 of those years he worked as a guide for the Yakutat Lodge owned by the Fanning family. And with each summer his knowledge and passion for fly fishing increased.
Returning to Mexico he adapted the techniques he had learned about fly fishing in the wilds of Alaska to the salt waters of the Pacific Ocean. At first he encountered many obstacles and complications but eventually he mastered methods that suited the deep sea environment. Combining different lines, flies and rods he found combinations that worked.
Now, this dedicated professional with a passion for fly fishing can certainly consider himself one of the best in Puerto Vallarta.
Book your Puerto Vallarta fly fishing trip with Chuy Cruz aboard the Damfino II or Damfino III. You won’t be disappointed.
